SECURITY DEBRIEFING

Security clearance debriefings are mandatory processes that inform individuals of their ongoing responsibilities regarding classified information after their access has been terminated.

Purpose of Debriefing
Debriefings are conducted to ensure that individuals understand their responsibilities for protecting classified information and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) after they no longer require access. This process is crucial for maintaining national security and preventing unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information.

When Debriefings Occur
Debriefings are required in several situations, including:
Termination of Employment: When an employee leaves a position, whether voluntarily or involuntarily.
Suspension or Revocation of Access: If an individual's eligibility for access to classified information is suspended or revoked.
Change in Facility Clearance: When a contractor's facility clearance is terminated.

Process of Debriefing

  •  Notification: The individual is informed of the debriefing and its purpose.
  •  Review of Responsibilities: The debriefing includes a review of the individual's ongoing responsibilities regarding classified information, including the   prohibition against retaining classified materials and the requirement to report any attempts to solicit sensitive information.
  • Documentation: The debriefing is documented, and the individual is not  required to sign a form acknowledging their understanding of the responsibilities  outlined during the debriefing.

In summary, security clearance debriefings are essential for safeguarding classified information and ensuring that individuals understand their responsibilities after their access has been terminated. These processes are governed by regulations and are critical for maintaining national security.
